Ten year old Pittsburgh boy buys William Perry's Super Bowl XX ring

Cliff Forrest, Jr. of Pittsburgh, PA purchased William "The Refrigerator" Perry's Super Bowl XX ring.  He bought the ring for $8,500, which he took from his college-savings fund.  After the child bought the ring, he learned of Perry's fight with Guillain-Barre syndrome, which causes paralysis.  Forrest, Jr. wanted to return it to Perry immediately after discovering this.

Cliff got a flight to Chicago to meet with Perry and handed him the ring he bought.  For his kind actions, Cliff received two signed jerseys and five signed football cards.

"The Refrigerator" was a former Chicago Bears defensive lineman.  He put the ring for auction in 2007, but no one knew why.  When he was selling it, however, it was sold for $27,000.  This could mean that the young boy bought a replica and was ripped off.

What are your opinions on this?  Do you think the 10 year old bought a fake?  Was spending his college savings a good idea?

  1. Whether or not the ring was fake, i think its amazing that the kid returned it. He bought it thinking it was real and especially since he is only 10 years old, it takes a lot to return something he spent a lot of his money on and something that he obviously wanted really badly.

  2. What a kid! He probably shouldn't have spent his college savings money but that's a moot point. To spend that money, and then give the ring back to the original owner without even asking for a monetary return? I think that kid understands what that ring probably means to The Fridge. And if it is fake, doesn't make this act any less amazing.

  3. I dont think he should have spent his college savings, but this is an amazing story. For the kid to return the ring that Perry worked so hard for is just amazing for a ten year old to understand. I know when I was ten I would never have thought of doing anything quite like this.

  4. Hopefully for both the boy and Perry's sake it is the real thing. This story is truly amazing and Perry's battle with his condition could mean he may pass soon. The boy did an honorable thing and at least he got rewarded by Perry. Although 8,500 is alot to spend on a ring!

  5. I hope the boy didn't get ripped off. I remember when I was that age and I would always want to have a super bowl ring, or have autographed jerseys. It was my thing and I never looked at the negative side, but hopefully he enjoys having the ring.

  6. For me, if I had $8500 dollars as a ten year old, I would have spent it on something completely different, but hey, I can't blame the kid, even if it is fake. I don't think spending his college money was a good idea (he will find that one out when he is chowing down on ramon noodles for dinner). But, I do think that giving the ring back was impressive especially for a ten year old.

  7. In today's world spending college money is never a good thing. Luckily, it was a kind story in the end as he returned it. As far as fake? I don't really know, but for the kid's sake I all it was all real for him.
