Rookie wins "The Great American Race"

Daytona Beach, Florida - Trevor Bayne had just turned 20 years old the day before his debut at the Daytona 500, which took place on February 20, 2011.  He raced the number 21 Ford racecar for the Wood Brothers team.  No one knew that this rookie driver could become the youngest NASCAR driver to win "The Great American Race".

As a young NASCAR driver, Trevor Bayne was just excited to lead before the green-white checkered flag.  It didn't hit him whenever he was on the final lap of the race that he would win the Daytona 500.  He thought he would see Tony Stewart pass him for the checkered flag, but he did not.  No one passed Bayne. He took the checkered flag for the first time.

The victory for NASCAR pioneers Leonard and Glen Wood, the Wood Brothers, ended a 10-year-losing streak and came the week of the 10th anniversary of Dale Earnhardt's fatal accident on the last lap of the 2001 Daytona 500.
